ONEIDA — Applications for the Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award are now available from the Zonta Club of Oneida Area and may be obtained from the high school guidance counselors of Oneida, Canastota, VVS, Stockbridge Valley and Holy Cross Academy.
This award is given to a local junior or senior student who demonstrates outstanding volunteer commitments to their local community. Jean M. Coon was educated in the Syracuse area graduating magna cum laude in 1953 from Syracuse University Law School.
Coon argued many precedent setting cases in the New York State Court of Appeals and her reputation among the bar and judiciary was unparalleled. Coon joined the Zonta Club of Saratoga County in 1962, transferring from the Zonta Club of Syracuse. She served as the Governor of District II and was Parliamentarian of the Zonta International Board and later served as Chairman of the Zonta International By-Law Committee.
Applications must be postmarked by March 5. This is a $500 award given by the Zonta Club of Oneida Area. The applications should be sent to the Zonta Club of Oneida Area, PO Box 199, Wampsville, NY 13163.
An active member of her Ballston Spa community, Zonta officials said her humanitarian efforts were always with a small “h” and never self-serving — good things just happened and most people never knew that Coon was the impetus behind the results.
After her death in 1962, District II established the Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award to honor her many achievements. Each Zonta Club in District II solicits applications from high school juniors and seniors in its area.
In the spring, each club selects a club award winner. Each club winner becomes a district finalist. The Award is announced in May and presented at the District II Conference or Seminar in October of every year.
