Alfred “Al” John Martin was a loving husband, caring father, incredible brother, and wonderful friend. He passed away at his home on Sunday, July 4, 2021, with his wife and sister by his side. Al was born on May 2, 1941, in Rome, NY, the son of Miguel L. and Theresa G. Martin.
Al graduated from RFA in 1959 and went on to Syracuse University to become an engineer. Through hard work and determination he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. He proudly served in the US Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain and becoming the Chief of Communications at Mather AFB.
On October 27, 1968, he was united in marriage with Shari, a devoted and happy union of 52 years.
After his honorable discharge from the service, he worked as an electrical engineer for GE in Utica, NY, and later as an optical engineer for Kodak, in Rochester, NY. Al’s favorite hobby was being an amateur radio operator. He was a proud member or the Rome and Sierra Foothills Amateur Radio Club receiving a certificate of appreciation presented on June 11, 2021. He taught his sons how to enjoy the outdoors through Scouting, even becoming a Scout Master along the way.
Al is survived by his sons, Chad, Andrew, and Jason; as well as his sister, Mickie. He has four grandchildren, Schuyler, Eva, Gianna, and Violette; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation was held at Lassila Funeral Chapel, Auburn, CA, on Monday, July 12, 2021. The funeral Mass will be at St. Theresa of Avila in Auburn on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. He will be interred at Calvary Catholic Cemetery on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at 10 a.m.
