Agency to use grant to boost access to behavioral health care in area

Upstate Cerebral Palsy’s Community Health and Behavioral Services unit has been awarded a $3.7 million, two-year federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The funding, local officials said, will allow the agency to enhance behavioral health services delivered at CHBS at its two locations: 260 W. Dominick St., Rome; and 1427 Genesee St., Utica.

As a result, CHBS hopes to achieve the following goals:

Increase access to behavioral health care for area residents;

Enhance recovery support services;

Increase availability of high-quality behavioral health services and culturally competent, trauma-informed care staff in the region; and

Increase staff wellness and satisfaction.

Compounded by the impacts of COVID-19, officials added that there is also a significant need to improve the disparities in behavioral health services and outcomes for vulnerable populations.

To address health disparities and better serve frontline staff, CHBS will establish, strengthen, and sustain the infrastructure necessary to provide audio-visual telehealth capabilities by establishing telehealth pods and better equipping staff to deliver remote care, the agency announcement added.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity to enhance our behavioral health services for the individuals we serve,” said Jenni Barlow-Gagnon, senior vice-president of Behavioral Health Services, CHBS.

“Specifically, we look forward to this funding improving the methods in which we deliver care through telehealth and improving the methods in which we deliver care to under-served individuals,” Barlow-Gagnon said.

CHBS has locations in Rome and Utica, and offer comprehensive behavioral health services to children and adults.

Those new to receiving services at CHBS should attend walk-in hours to complete an intake, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1427 Genesee St., Utica, N.Y. 13501.
