ROME — A family of five has been displaced and two people were injured — including a firefighter — in a house fire on South Doxtator Avenue in Rome Saturday morning, according to the Rome Fire Department.

The injuries were not severe, fire officials said.

"It started upstairs" at 206 S. Doxtator Ave. shortly before 11 a.m., said Deputy Fire Chief David Gratch. A neighbor across the street noticed the fire. The chief said there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

"The neighbor went in and told them to get out," Gratch stated. "Told them he saw smoke coming from the upstairs windows."

Two adults and three children live at the residence. One adult resident recently had surgery, and Gratch said there was some difficulty getting him out of the burning home. Gratch said AmCare Ambulance assisted with that evacuation when they arrived.

The resident was reinjured during the escape attempt, Gratch said. He was treated at the scene by AmCare personnel.

"There was a lot of fire and smoke coming out of the two upstairs windows," when fire crews arrived on the scene, Deputy Chief Gratch said. The city firefighters launched an immediate interior attack with two hose companies.

"They went inside and put it out," Gratch said. The fire was under control in about 15 minutes.

During the blaze, the chief said the fire burned the power lines attached to the home and they came down while firefighters were still on scene. National Grid cut the power within minutes while firefighters avoided the downed lines.

One firefighter suffered an injury while inside the home, Gratch said. The firefighter was released from the scene to seek medical help.

"He should be fine," Gratch assured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the chief said.

One upstairs bedroom was "completely destroyed," he stated, with smoke and water damage throughout the upstairs, and water damage downstairs. Gratch said the home is not a total loss.

He said he did not know if the family has insurance.

According to city tax records, the property is owned by Rome NY Rentals LLC. It has an assessed property value of $21,500.
