NEW HARTFORD — The 11-year-old boy who saved his neighbor’s home by dousing a fire in their garage was honored for his heroic actions by the Willowvale Fire Department Thursday night.

Carter Carro, of Bleachery Place, was the guest of honor at the fire department’s monthly meeting. He was awarded a plaque and an ID card naming him an honorary Willowvale firefighter. He was also offered an open invitation to become a junior firefighter when he turns 16.

“Last night, we had a packed house that all came together to recognize a local boy for his courageous actions,” wrote Willowvale Fire Chief Noel Ames on social media. Carro’s actions “we believe helped prevent a great deal of property damage,” Ames wrote.

On Jan. 18, authorities said Carro saw a fire in a neighbor’s garage at about 3:39 p.m. and he rushed to the other home with a fire extinguisher. Authorities said Carro managed to knock down the fire before it could spread deeper into the garage or even into the residence.

Along with the awards from the fire department, the New Hartford Police Department gave Carro an official patrol hat and gift certificates, and he received the same from the ABC Fire Extinguisher Company, which also gave Carro a new extinguisher to replace the one he’d used. New Hartford Town Supervisor Paul Miscione and several board members also honored Carro for his act of courage, officials said.
