ROLLING THE BACK STRETCH — Jamie Friesen rolls the back stretch on Wednesday afternoon at Utica-Rome Speedway. The Vernon speedway located on Route 5 will have open practice on Friday with gates opening up at 5 p.m. and cars on the track from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Another practice will be held on Tuesday. The grandstands on both nights will be free. Pit admission is $35 for non-members and $30 for members. “The Home of Heroes” will open up for the season next Friday, April 21, with “Honoring ALEX” $6,800-to-win modified race.

ROMANS ON CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM — Rome Free Academy seniors Drew Kopek and Alyssa Nardslico are members of the Syracuse Valley Eagles hockey team that won the USA Hockey 19U Tier II National Championship over the weekend of April 1-2 in Irvine, California. The Eagles won all six of their games, beating teams from Minnesota, Rhode Island and Michigan in the preliminary round. The Eagles went on to beat Farmingham Hills Little Ceasars of Michigan in the quarterfinals 5-1, Mid-Fairfield CT 6-3 in the semifinals and the East Coast Wizards of Massachusetts 6-1 in the title game. Kopek finished the weekend with two and five assists while Nardslico had three assists.

Recent changes in seasonal regulations have made fishing for several species, including trout, a year-round proposition. Still, for many, the start of the season remains a cherished ritual, an important sign of spring.

NEW WHEELS — Rome Country Club received six new EZ-Go golf carts Thursday. According to Wes Cupp, owner of Rome Country Club and director of business development for the Sentinel Media Company, the new carts are EFI (electronic fuel injection) which means no more choke cable. He said the carts have two USB ports in each one for charging phones and devices. According to Cupp, the carts are part of their $110,000 capital investment project the club started last fall. Cupp said they currently have 48 carts in their fleet. The golf course is open for the season. He added the greens have already been rolled and mowed this week.
