The defending Section III Class D champion Westmoreland football team picked right up where it left off last season as the Bulldogs romped to a 55-19 road victory over Bishop Grimes on Saturday afternoon during a Class D crossover game in the season opener for both teams.
Senior quarterback Zach Green ran for 108 yards and four touchdowns off 12 carries, as Tim Harrison rushed for 189 yards and a score on 20 carries, and Robert Heitzman finished with 169 yards on the ground with two rushing TDs off of 18 carries.
With the guests clinging to a narrow 22-19 lead, the Bulldogs ripped off five unanswered touchdowns, two coming from Green, to seal the victory.
The Bulldogs, who scored all their touchdowns via the run, finished for 505 total yards on the ground.
Grant Pick led the defense, which held Bishop Grimes scoreless in the second half, with four total tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery as Tyler Crandall finished with five tackles and an interception, Devon Tophoven added six tackles, and Tyler Taverne finished with two tackles and a fumble recovery in the win.
The Bulldogs, which finished 10-1 overall last season and brought home the school’s sixth Section III trophy, will look to continue their streak as they host Pulaski for a Class D Central matchup on Saturday at 2.
Caz trumps VVS
The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill football team opened its season with a 48-6 setback against hosting Cazenovia during a Class B East meeting.
The guests gave up seven straight touchdowns before Matt McCoy found the end zone on a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Jake Wilson ran for 166 yards and three TDs on 13 carries, while Andrew Vogel finished with 90 yards on the ground on 12 carries, and Mike Nourse ran for a pair of TDs for Cazenovia.
The Red Devils will try and regroup on Friday night as they travel to Mexico starting at 7 o’clock.
HP falls to Herkimer
Holland Patent struggled in its season opener against defending Section III Class C champion Herkimer as the Magicians scored a 53-13 triumph in a Class C East contest in Holland Patent.
The visitors opened the game with seven unanswered touchdowns and built a 47-0 lead before the Golden Knights punched in a touchdown on a 1-yard TD run by Marc Grogan in the fourth quarter.
David Meola scored on a late 7-yard TD burst for the Golden Knights as well.
Austin Mills had TD runs of 8, 40, and 5, as teammate Matt Borek scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and again on a 67-yard fumble recovery for the guests during the win. Borek also kicked in five extra-points.
Holland Patent travels to Notre Dame on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
