Passenger dies in ATV crash; high rate of speed cited

TOWN OF SALISBURY — A 26-year-old Herkimer County woman was killed when the all-terrain vehicle she was riding crashed into a tree Friday afternoon.

Leah Marie Holtz was riding as passenger, state police said. Operator James K. Siver was hospitalized with leg and pelvis injuries.

Herkimer-based troopers said Siver, age 32, of 123 Mechanic St., was traveling southbound on Bingham Mill Road at a high rate of speed at 6 p.m. when the ATV went off the highway and struck a tree. Both Siver and Holtz were thrown off the four-wheeler, authorities said.

Holtz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Siver was air-lifted to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, authorities said. His condition was not available this morning.

State police said speed was a factor in this fatal accident. The investigation is continuing.
