John R. Smith, age 83, of Rome, passed away Monday June 11, 2012 at Rome Memorial Hospital. John was born on July 3, 1928, son of Claude T. and Marie A Hawkins Smith, Sr in Rome NY.
John (Jack) married Lorraine A Sharpe on November 25, 1948 at St. Peters Parish, Rome. They shared 53 years together before her passing on October 6, 2001.
John worked until retirement at Rome Cable Corporation, where he was the Manager of the Maintenance and Calibration Department. He also formerly owned and operated the Wells Boat Shop, and Smith Sales and Service of Rome.
John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed and took great pride in wood working projects in his spare time. He was known to be quite the handyman.
He is survived by seven daughters and four son-in-laws, Sharron Smith, Rome; Jacqueline Libertino, Lee Center; Mary Jane and Terry Aikens, Rome; Kathryn and Robert Tuthill, Lee Center; Lorraine and David Cimpi, Oneida; Abigail Smith, Rome; Tricia and Richard Hladun, Holland Patent; five sons and three daughter-in-laws, John R and Glenda Smith, Jr., Fort Ann, NY; Patrick and Sharon Smith, Rome; Micheal and Judy Smith, Rome; Richard and Mary Ann Smith, Oneida; Brian Smith and Phong Diep, Ithaca; 40 beloved grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way; and one fifth generation great-great-grandchild; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Elizabeth Abbe, Mary Theresa Cole and husband Robert, and Virginia Page all of Rome.
He was predeceased by his parents, one grandaughter Kimberly Lynn Neiss, one great-granddaughter Alexandria Catherine Snow, brother Claude T. Smith, Jr; son-in-law Jack Libertino, and two brother-in-laws Frank (Bud) Abbe and Richard Page.
May John now spend an eternity with Lorraine as he so desired. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend gratitude and thanks to Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Health Care Facility Staff for their care and compassion during John’s long illness.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 15, at 10 a.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc, 418 N. George St., Rome. Interment will take place in Point Rock Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
