Gertrude Kennedy (Murray) Smales, 76, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2012 after a long illness. Her passing occurred at Bethany Gardens with her loving family by her side. She was born on March 26, 1936 in Waltham, MA; a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Kelly Murray.
She graduated from Concord High School in Massachusetts. On November 5, 1960 at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA, Gerky was united in marriage to John B. Smales, Sr. She was a Certified Director of Religious Education through the Syracuse Diocese. Gert was the Director of Religious Education for the Archdiocese of the military for 23 years at many United States Air Force Bases. She sincerely enjoyed being a substitute teacher for Rome Catholic Schools for the past 26 years and was a member of the Religion Department for two years.
Gert was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was very active in her grandchildren’s lives and would always attend their many activities. Gert enjoyed crafts, especially quilting and was an avid reader. She was a member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, John; a son, John B. Smales, Jr. of Rome; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Sally and Timothy Wagner of Raleigh, NC, Katherine "Meg" and Kenneth Maxwell, serving in the military, Nancy Wilson of Rome, and Kennedy and Rosario Marchione of Rome; 13 cherished grandchildren, Maggie, Sandy, Mary, Kathleen, Charles, Joan, Kegan, Connor, Clancy, Annabelle, Emily, Cecilia-Clare, Molly and her husband Steven; and several nieces and nephews.
Gert was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Louise Maxwell; a son-in-law, Ron Wilson; two sisters, Nancy Caporizzo and Priscilla Gardner; and two brothers, Richard and Charles Murray.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff at Bethany Gardens, especially the fourth floor.
Mrs. Smales’s funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by Rev. Robert Kelly. Private interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 209 N. Washington St., Rome (336-5700).
