Oriskany a win away from Class D crown

The Oriskany baseball team battled its way into the Section III Class D championship game with a 6-1 semifinal win over Center State Conference rival New York Mills, 6-1, on Saturday night at DeLutis Field.

The Redskins, who avenged two regular season losses, were led behind the arm of senior Steve Rossi, who hurled a complete-game four-hitter and finished with six strikeouts for the win. Rossi improved to 3-0 on the mound this spring.

Noah Lupini led the club offensively going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI, while Nate Keating added two hits and three RBIs at the dish.

Weather-permitting, the sixth-seeded Redskins were scheduled to take on defending Section III champion Brookfield today at 4:30 p.m. at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse. Brookfield, 17-1, advanced with a 4-3 win over McGraw in their semifinal game.

Oriskany, 16-5 overall, lost 4-3 and 4-1 to the CSC Division IV champion Mills during the regular season. The Redskins are looking for their first sectional title since they won back-to-back crowns in 2006-07.

Zach Vennaro had two hits and an RBI as Shaun Kula took the loss on the hill for second-seeded New York Mills, which ended its season at 15-5 overall.

South Lewis claims Class C-1 title

South Lewis claimed the Class C-1 title and advanced to the overall Class C final with a 7-3 victory over Little Falls on Monday at DeLutis Field.

The second-seeded Falcons (19-2) downed Tully, 15-2, during Saturday’s semifinals, and they fended off No. 8 Little Falls after they scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to advance to Thursday’s overall Class C final against Class C-2 winner Fabius-Pompey (14-2) at Alliance Bank Stadium starting at 4:30.

Jason Martin picked up the win on the mound after he struck out nine batters and held Little Falls to one run off seven hits and two walks.

Martin also drove in two runs, while Shawn Loomis had two RBIs, and Elliot Martin and Hunter Chruscicki added an RBI apiece.

VVS falls in Class B-1 semis

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill saw its season end with a 6-5 setback against top-seeded Westhill during the Class B-1 semifinals after the hosts scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

James Flagler drove in two runs and the Red Devils, which ended its season at 14-6 overall, took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning before Westhill scored a pair of runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh.

Josh Webb pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and garnered one earned run off six hits with two strikeouts, while Jesse Whitmeyer (3-3) took the loss on the mound in relief. VVS committed five errors in the field.

Collin Laguzza and Marc Iseneker drove in runs for the visitors.

Westhill (19-4) went on to defeated No. 3 Notre Dame, 12-3, in Monday’s Class B-1 final at DeLutis Field. They take on the winner of tonight’s 7 o’clock Class B-2 final between second-seeded Sherburne-Earlville and No. 5 Cazenovia at DeLutis Field on Thursday at Alliance Bank Stadium starting at 4.
