Leo J. Derrick, Jr., age 58, of Rome, passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2012, after a long illness.
He was born August 21, 1953, in Rome, a son of Leo J. and Jo Ann Christopher Derrick, and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1971. He formerly was employed at Rome Cable Corp and later at the Rome CNYDSO. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, American-Ukrainian Veterans and Men’s Club, Rome Elks and the Lee American Legion.
Leo was a great sports enthusiast, he was an avid golfer, bowler, baseball, softball and hockey player and loved to cross country ski.
He is survived by his mother, Jo Ann; a sister Anita and Doug Beebe of South Bend, IN; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Larry and Cheri Derrick of Remsen, and Lynn Derrick of Taberg; nieces and nephews, Daniel, Julia and Matthew Beebe, Lynn, Jr. and Tiffany Derrick, Sullivan and Connor Derrick, and Ryan and Tara Evans; and many special friends including Dave Young, Rick Davies, Kevin Kotary, John "Pa" Greene, Lenny Wodjyla, Terry Miller, Tom Pickett and Rich Rice, and all the other many friends Leo made during his adventures.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Hospice, especially nurses, Rene and Jane, nephews, Sully, Connor and Lynn, Jr, and special thanks to Dan Urtz; for their care, compassion and friendship extended to Leo during his illness.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday 4 to 7 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to a "casual" reception at the American-Ukrainian Veterans and Men’s Club, following the funeral service.
