Charged for burglary and stealing cash and cigarettes

NEW HARTFORD — A 46-year-old man is facing a felony burglary charge for sneaking into an acquaintance’s home Saturday morning and stealing cash and cigarettes.

Police said John R. Berube, of Oneida Street, slipped into another man’s Elm Street residence while that person was asleep at about 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Police said Berube stole a quantity of cash and a pack of cigarettes before fleeing.

The victim was familiar with Berube and provided police with a description. Officers found Berube a short time later at his own residence. The cigarettes were recovered from Berube’s vehicle.

Berube is charged with one count each of second-degree burglary, a class C felony, and petty larceny, police said. He was arraigned in Town Court and was sent to county jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or bond. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
