Demolition first phase of Rescue Mission reconstruction

COMING DOWN — A large excavator demolished the rear of 280 E. Dominick St., the site of the fomer Guggi’s Furniture, Saturday. Matthew Miller, executive director of Rome Rescue Mission, said the demolition was the first phase of construction for the mission’s new shelter. Rome Rescue Mission is in its second year of a 5-year capital campaign to raise money for construction and so far about a quarter of a million dollars has been raised. Crews were demolishing rather than renovating the existing building because it was deemed too old and unsafe, Miller said. He said constructing a new building on the site would be more cost-effective. (Sentinel photo by Stefan Matwijec)
