WHITESTOWN — Robert E. Baber has been appointed marketing director for the fiber optic manufacturing and distribution company Fiber Instrument Sales.
Baber’s responsibilities include overseeing the marketing department, including marketing and communications, publications, website design and development, graphic design, public relations and advertising.
Prior to joining FIS, Baber was dean of the School of Art at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and also director of communications and development.
He is a graduate of Herkimer County Community College and was recently named to the college’s Alumni Hall of Fame. He is also a graduate of Utica College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and journalism. Baber also holds a master’s degree in journalism from Ball State University. He is a former journalism instructor at Utica College and was managing editor of the Evening Telegram in Herkimer.
Baber has been involved in many community organizations including the Downtown Utica Development Association, the Rust2Green initiative, the Ray Simon Institute at Utica College, and the Knights of Columbus. He also facilitates a Nurturing Father’s Program for the Family Nurturing Center of Central New York.
Baber is a native of Utica. He lives in Westmoreland, with his wife, Nancy; they have two children and four grandchildren.
Fiber Instrument Sales is an affiliate company of Giotto Enterprises, a group of six firms that generate $70 million in annual sales. The companies employ 350 people locally and is headquartered at 161 Clear Road. FIS was recently listed in The Mohawk Valley Business Journal as being among the top 15 technology companies in Central New York.
