Free mental health forum tonight

The Ruiz Family Support Center, 303 W. Liberty St., third floor, will host a free community forum to discuss recent closures of mental health programs at 6 tonight.

Participants will talk about "Neglect of Mental Illness," an article from Scientific American March 2012 and how it relates to the recent closing of Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center, as well as public school special education programs, jail mental health programs, special security triage and available community resources. According to the article, nearly one in two people in the U.S. will suffer from depression, anxiety disorders or another mental health ailment at some point in their lifetime, and about one in 17 Americans currently has a serious mental illness.

Parts of the discussion will be recorded and later viewed online on YouTube. For more information about the event, contact Barbara Lee Pfendler at 339-3935.
