Beware of knock-knock scam ‘helping’ Humane Society

The Humane Society of Rome is warning area residents that a woman is falsely posing as a volunteer from the shelter to collect money for a non-existent fund-raiser.

Doghouse collection boxes are located at area businesses and are being used by the animal shelter as its fund-raiser at this time.

"The humane society does not solicit door-to-door, which this woman is doing," said Lynn Rosen, president of the Humane Society of Rome on Lamphear Road. "She also is using an older doghouse box with a different photo."

The box currently being used features a photo of "Winston," the dog that appears in the humane society’s weekly column in the Sunday Sentinel.

"The boxes with Winston’s photo are the only legitimate boxes, which can be found in local establishments," Rosen said. "There are also boxes outside the City of Rome in different businesses."

The current doghouse boxes also come with a lock and key for security purposes.
