Rome Catholic girls even overall mark after win

The Rome Catholic girls basketball squad rebounded from their loss to Westmoreland and answered back with a 50-43 come-from-behind triumph over visiting Morrisville-Eaton in a Center State Conference Division III matchup on Monday at Rome Catholic high school.

The Lady Redwings trailed 25-17 at the half, but bounced back to take the lead after outscoring the visitors 17-8 in the third quarter and Rome never looked back while they improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the CSC.

Kim Quinn once again led the Lady Redwings attack with 18 points while going 6-for-6 from the foul line. Mackenzie Spellicy also added ten points with four rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Samantha Strzepek fired in 11 points including two three-point buckets, eight rebounds and six steals. Megan Melioris also grabbed eight rebounds.

Abby Clark led Morrisville-Eaton with 16 points in the loss.

Bees sting RFA

The Rome Free Academy boys swimming team fell to a 49-39 defeat to the host Baldwinsville Bees.

Nick Brement left the meet with three victories in the contest including first place finishes in the 100-meter breaststroke and contributed to a win each for the 200 and 400 relay teams for Rome’s three wins.

Brement joined Aidan Slagle, Randy Pawlikowski and Tom Gymburch in the 400, and in the 200 again with Slagle and Pawlikowski.

Carthage sinks South Lewis

In other boys swimming action, South Lewis sank to a 86-78 loss to Carthage.

Mark Oster was the top swimmer for the Falcons with four wins.

Oster captured the 50-meter freestyle in 24.73 seconds, and the 100 backstroke for a 1:10.32 result.

Oster also had wins in the 200 and 400 relay teams. Oster teamed with Dan Bailey, Travis Williams and Mike Haig in the 200, and teamed with Haig, Bailey and Jeff Millick in the 400.

Andy Dibble also was first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:22.39.

VVS served to Living Word

The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls volleyball squad suffered to a 3-0 shutout loss to visiting Living Word Academy. Set scores of the match were 25-23, 20-25, and 25-18.

Rachel Brown made six kills, ten assists and three digs for the Lady Red Devils, while Alexis Albro had six kills, five aces and nine digs. Stephanie Siriano also had five kills, one ace, seven assists and four digs, and Melissa Meyers had three kills and seven digs as VVS drops to 3-4 overall.

Waterville blanks Westmoreland

In more girls volleyball action, Westmoreland battled to a 3-0 shutout loss to visiting Waterville.

Amber Bennett made 13 digs and six aces to lead 1-8 overall Westmoreland, while Ashley Russell had two kills and five blocks.

Brianna Stephenson contributed with one assist, seven digs and three blocks, and Kate Montgomery shot three kills and two digs.
