Keep Rauscher building for community use

Is anyone besides me appalled that the YMCA wants to sell the Rauscher Center even though the building was donated and area residents have high hopes of reopening the senior center?

The late Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rauscher donated the building for senior and community use in the 1980s, and a state grant provided handicap amenities.

For two decades or more the YMCA sponsored senior programs in Camden and Sylvan Beach, serving the towns of Camden, Vienna, Verona and Annsville. These programs have closed, leaving our area seriously underserved. A Sylvan Beach fund-raising walk raised $3,000 toward reopening the Rauscher Center.

The Parkway Senior Center of Utica has been working with residents, area legislators, the Office for the Aging, the Sylvan Beach board and the YMCA in hopes of starting a health and wellness center in the Rauscher building by early spring.

The Y apparently has the legal right to sell the building. But is it the right thing for a YMCA to do?
