After twice receiving fake checks from someone she had met on the Internet, 37-year-old Terri Schwartz was told to bring any more checks straight to the police.
She didn’t.
Schwartz, of 418 Ann St., pleaded guilty before City Court Judge Daniel C. Wilson Wednesday to attempted petty larceny, reduced from attempted grand larceny. Her case was adjourned for sentencing to Nov. 25.
When the third check arrived in the mail, Schwartz told police that it looked different than the first two, so she brought it to her bank in the hopes of cashing it. Police said at 5 p.m. March 13, Schwartz attempted to deposit the fake check for $2,800 into her bank account at Rome Savings Bank. Police said the check was drawn on the closed account of a woman in Nebraska who was a victim of identity theft.
In a statement to police, Schwartz said she received the check from a person she had met on the Internet. She said she did not know the woman from Nebraska and had not been expecting any free money, but she tried to cash it anyway.
