Turning Stone hosting 9-ball tour stop
VERONA — The 13th edition of the Turning Stone Classic on Mike Zuglan’s Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour is set for action from today until Sunday.
The floor of the event center will host 16 tables of action in a double-elimination tournament featuring 128 players from throughout the world.
The doors open at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 11 a.m. on Sunday for the championship rounds with free admission.
The field will include Billiards Congress of America Hall of Famer Johnny Archer, 8-Ball, 9-Ball and straight pool world champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, former US Open winners Gabe Owen and John Schmidt, as well as Buffalo’s Dennis Hatch, who won nine of ten tournaments on tour.
Martin holding training sessions at Boxing HOF
CANASTOTA — The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced that boxer Christy Martin will be setting up a training headquarters at the Hall of Fame from Aug. 24-31.
Martin will conduct workout sessions from 3-4 p.m. daily at the Hall of Fame’s Event Pavilion throughout the week. The daily workouts are open to the public with workout sessions including sparring, heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope and more. Admission to the Hall of Fame will also be waived during the sessions.
Martin is a two-time world champion who helped bring women’s boxing into the mainstream over the course of her 20-year career. Martin is striving to reach 50 career victories, having earned her 48th win on Aug. 1, bringing her professional record to 48-5-3 with 31 knockouts.
Martin is also scheduled to box at "Fight Night at the Fair" on Sept. 2 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
